Does anyone have suggestions for the use of broken, crumbling bricks, once
used as the door of a reduction kiln or floor of a raku kiln............hate
to throw away a good size bucket of these pieces so we're looking for possible
recycle use. Thanks.

Might use them for putting your raku pieces on in the raku kiln.

These are soft insulating bricks, I presume?
For all these uses crush the bricks and put them through a sieve of
the appropriate mesh.
1 -- Kiln furniture. Use "window screen mesh" and smaller. Use
about 1/2 bricks and 1/2 fire clay to make kiln posts. Make them
by rolling out big coils, or make a die for an extruder if you
want to make lots.
2 -- Grog, whatever mesh you want in your clay, I like 40 mesh
and smaller. Add to your claybody the next time you make clay.
3 -- Castable refractory for kiln building or repair. "Marble size"
and smaller, add to a castable refractory recipe.

depending on the size of the peices, u can save them and put little
glaze test pots on them (instead of directly on your shelf) when
firing.. may save glaze drips on shelves

Hello Emily: I do not have a raku kiln but do recycle some things from my
kiln-electric. I have been having fun making bottles with stoppers. I can
bisque the stoppers in the bottles but glazing is a different matter. We have
been drilling holes in broken peep hole plugs for the glazed stoppers. For
the stoppers that are too top heavy for those, a piece or whole brick work
fine and don't tip over. I have used some scrap clay to hand build some fun
things on stems to insert into potted plants. The drilled brick is my helper.
