I don't do a lot of "hump" throwing, but when I do, the gizmo I use to
cut of is a throwing spear which has a point at one end and a piece of
twisted fine cord at the other. I make a groove in the right place with
the point, then run the (wet) cord into it while the wheel is still
moving slowly, let it complete one circuit then pull gently on it and
catch the pot with the fingers of the other hand. Result: a nice level
bottom to the pot with a shell pattern on it (I don't trim/turn them).
Also I don't get S cracks but then I use a fairly sandy clay, maybe
that's why.
