HI!

My name is Shaun Besim. I am in Year 9 and I am doing a project for school
on ceramics.

I would appreciate it if you would be able to help me by sending a profile
of one of your people who make and design clay models.

The information I need inlcudes where they started their career in
ceramics, how long they have been doing it for, the different techniques
they use etc. etc.

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Hi Everyone on Clayart,

I have been asked to produce tiles for a fundraising project for a local public elementary school. These will be similar to the bricks that people purchase with an inscription usually found in the front of a public building - here you find them in front of the new Comerica Park in Detroit. The original brochure was sent out to parents and teachers. A 4" X 8" tile will be $50 with 30 letters, an 8" X 8" tile with 40 letters will be $250, a 12" X 12" tile with 50 letters will be $500 and a 12" X 12" tile with a decorative border will be $1,000. They have already sold several 4 X 8 and 8 X 8 and one 12 X 12 with decorative border (the principal who organized the fundraiser bought this one).

I didn't set the prices, I'm just making the tile. However, at the second meeting, the principal handed me a second brochure for corporations and businesses. We have an 8 X 8 for $750 with company logo, 12 X 12 for $1,500, a 12 X 12 decorative tile for $3000 and a 16 X 16 for $5000. NOW, she has asked my opinion. She has not sent out the brochure, but will have a meeting soon with a few businesses and corporations - Ford Motor Company is one that I know for sure.

It all sounds really expensive to me. I have had no experience with this and I therefore I have no opinion. Producing the tiles doesn't bother me, I discussed copyright and getting permission for logos.

Does anyone have any experience with this and have an opinion? Or if no one has any experience with anything like this and wants to give me an opinion I'm happy with that too.

Fraternally yours,

Hi Nancy
I am not quite sure what you are asking.
Are you comparing the two sets of prices and wondering whether the second 'corporate' set of prices is too high to ask for your local project? and this is with regard to prices which will be asked from donors?

Of course the requested 'donation' price doesn't have very much to do with the tile itself, though the higher donors certainly like a bigger chunk of fluxed earth if they can get it!
, but has to do with how much money the group expects or wants to raise, and with how many tiles, so I would think the school group needs to do the math.
Of course it is always of interest to know how much is going to the tile maker.
I have done a few of these projects.... These projects can appear deceptively simple at the outset... depending on how you are doing the letters, they end up taking more attention and time than you might think at the outset...
sometimes just keeping track of the names, getting spelling corrections etc....can drive you bonkers.

We did a project with large octagon red terra cotta tiles and a raised stenciled glaze in a cursive font, for the floor of the San DIego Historical Society museum... for awhile it went swimmingly, then we had some trouble with the stencil glaze, it kept flaking as the stencil was peeled off, then we started getting warping on some of the tiles...ended up firing many more than anticipated...fortunately the bid was OK
another one involved pressing fish tiles with names impressed, ....

so my only advice on your end is don't lowball the bid, and take into account that you may need to do some duplicates, etc. and make sure the group can get the profit/donation from those lower rung tiles too.
.... as for the other, the donor price, i think it varies...at an elementary school level you will have a lot of folks at the $50 level and a some at the higher levels..
Personally I think $750 is too high for the 'lowest level' of donation, especially at a public elementary school. Even if $50 is too low, I would think $75, or $100 and then up...$500, $1000, $2000, $5000
