For any out there who do some wholesale...who generally picks up the
shipping. I usually only charge the buyer the UPS fee while I handle the
expense of the bubble wrap, boxes etc etc. Am I in line? Thanks

Kim, yes, the buyer pays the shipping fees. Some people charge an
additional handling fee above the UPS charge for packaging, etc. I
think it creates resentment -- better to build the cost of packaging
time and supplies into your pricing structure.

Is wholesale considered to be 50% off your retail?
Is the going consignment rate 60/40? Or does this vary from area to area?
Also, I have been able to get lots of bubble wrap, boxes and pop corn (foam)
from manufacturers reps. Samples are packed really well and they are glad to
have me get these things out of their way.
Thanks for any info!

charge them as much as possible..galleries are well placed to sell work at
good markups and a few more percent in packing charges will make little
difference especially if it is introduced in your next price rise....

Kim,

Standard practice, so far as I know, is that with wholesale the buyer pays
shipping. That includes wrapping and packing materials, as well as your
time. It seems to me a lot to ask, but then anything I buy mail-order, I
pay the whole cost of shipping. I've never had a buyer complain about
this--they're accustomed to paying the larger companies for shipping costs.
Can you, as a small business person, afford to pick up the tab when the big
boys can't see their way clear to doing this?

Consignment shops expect the artist to pay shipping. Now *that* is a lot to
ask. First, you stock their shelves for free, and second, you get to pay
for the privilege. And third, when they sell your stuff, they might--just
might-- pay you for it. No thanks, guys.
