Can one absorb manganese throiugh skin contact..
I had the mother of all headaches and nausea 24 hours after a marathon
glazing,in the course of which I mixed various glazes with my whole arm
in the bucket. Some of these were heavy incobalt and manganese.
I've had the occasional tension headaxhe after a glazing but this was so
different I thought I'd check..

I would recomend that you should not put your arm in a bucket of glaze
you getting sick is a good indicator that something went wrong, or it's just
the beggining of flue season
cobalt and manganese are two things you do not want to get in your body,
I am not a doctor but I think the manganese can be a poison and couse some
nervous system damage.
We had this young teacher in school who used to say, "you gota wonder about
all those oldtimers who we think act wierd, and they have been working around
all these materials for so long not understanding the effects they had on
them"
in grad school I had my arms in big buckets of glaze glazing real large pots,
but they were glazes that had not a lot of toxic materials. My friend Dave
Pier would come down on me because I would always freak on a student who I saw
doing this, and Dave is a glaze chemist and he knew what the stuff was capable
of.
We are not going to live forever, and caution is a good keyword.
don't stick your arm in the glaze anymore, and check with a doctor or a
poision control center to get more information

I think you should treat your glaze materials with very serious respect even
if you know of no evidence about skin absorbtion (very likely none has been
gathered) There are a lot of wierd reactions that can happen and dust and
vapor particles can be involved too.
I used to be very caveleer about it all untill recently when I got nickle
hypersensitivity. Please look after yourself use gloves and a mask.
During the day I am a doctor.

Hi Donn and others who have responded to this thread:
If one needs to place the hands in a bucket of glaze, regardless of the
glaze's mineral composition, it is prudent to wear rubber gloves. This way,
one could find a tool or ware that accidently fell into the bucket, without
risking skin or other ailments.

I just moved my outdoor studio stuff indoors, to prepare for a predicted
rainstorm, and to stay warm this winter. By the way, I'm now wearing clothing
while working--after a long hot summer!
