slide formats

I recently made slides of some of my work. Doing as professional job as
possible. Howerver, the thought occured to me that when submiting slides
to a juried show they may prefer to view all slides in one format -
either all horizontal or perpindicular. Can anyone answer me as to which
of these is most prevelant? Or dosen't it matter?

Whether it is perpendicular or horizontal makes
no difference. That depends solely on the shape
of the piece being photographed - the idea is to
fill up the frame as well as you can. If you do not,
the piece will look dimenished when it is projected.
Size of piece does not matter; use a lens that will
permit filling the frame, and use a horizontal or
perpendicular format depending on whether the
piece is tall or wide.

I think the horizontal or vertical depends on which way captures the
pice best. I never heard any mention regarding judging based on that. I
have judged a few show from trays of slides sent to the juror. I never
considered it a question. Good clear slides are what counts.

Speaking from about 20 years experience in the audio visual world, it is better,
although by no means required, that all slides should be the same format...vert.
or horizontal.

Rule of thumb, anything that detracts from the viewers attention to the subject,
will decrease the impression the subject makes, in this case, your work. The
same holds true whether it's the background, props (like flowers), different
glazes in different slides, etc.

This especially holds true in a jurying where the slides may only be shown for
15-30 seconds, during which time the juror is expected to figure out what's on
the screen (3 to 5 images), how well it's made, how unique it is and what score
it should be assigned. Essentially an impossible task...but done everyday.

The problem obviously becomes that tall vertical objects don't show well in
horizontal. To that end, group the slides so the vertical shows well when all
slides are projected at the same time. You just have to hope the slide go in the
projectors in the same order they do in your sleeves.

Hope this helps

Vertical or Horizontal it doesn't matter. What matters more is that the
framing is appropriate for the piece. A tall thin vase would look best
shot vertically, a platter would look best horizontal. Good luck

Shirley,

My experience,... It doesn't really matter. The main thing has always been to
label them with the required information and then indicate, in some way, which
end is up. This facilitates the process of moving the slides from the envelopes
to the slide carousels.

Now if your talking about viewing slides in sheet format (meaning not
projected)...I was taught in school to arrange the slides as you would a
composition, trying to make the entire sheet appear balanced but with enough
variety to keep it interesting. I always combine the verticle and horizontal
formats of the slides when I arrange a sheet of slides this way. I also look
for colors or shapes in the work and try to arrange them so that not everything
looks alike, or not all the blue pots are next to each other ( I don't really
have blue pots;-). I even try to use the sharpest and best images as focal
points in the page to help the viewer move through the entire page rather than
just the top row or the bottom corner, or the center, or... Maybe this method
is a bit retentive, but it's something to consider anyway.

always the aesthetic eye,

doug
