Hi folks
Bit of variety here - posting from a potter's partner. Poor potter hasn't
yet got proper workshop so has filled corner of mutual bedroom with potting
setup including particularly sexy black dustbin full of clay. Problem is
she's mixing slip in the bath, which seems to be bringing about our steady
disconnection from mains drainage... she assures me it just DOESN'T clog the
pipes!
Is this, or is this not, an absolute lie? ;-)

Phil,
Yes, it will clog your pipes, and no, she's probably not lying--just
doesn't know. And find her a corner of the living room or something in
which to make pottery--or else, ask her to help you make a pot. Did you
ever figure out how that couple on "Ghost" got their hands clean so quickly
after working on their 'collaborative' piece?

Should clay or slip go down the drain?
In many years of teaching ceramics and running my own studio, I have never
had a drain clog from clay or slip so long as plenty of water flows along
with it. Clogs happen, but there is always at tool or something else to
blame. However, it could be bad for a septic system - filling it with
sediment and possibly clogging the drain field. I have not had to deal with
a septic system. I doubt that public sewers appreciate much solids like
clay, but they can probably deal with it. I always try to have a water can
next to the sink in which to prewash clay, let it settle and reuse it rather
than waste it. Plaster, on the other hand, is very bad. It sets up under
water. It does gradually fill the pipes. We require all plaster to be placed
in the solid waste containers and the wash water to to be in pails and
poured outside in the grass - never down the drains.
