My mother bought some of those little terra cotta flowerpots in the
cooking section at Tobacco USA last week. She wanted to make bread in
them like in some restaurant she'd been to.
When she washed them, (hot soapy water) she said they had a white fizzy
stuff come out of the clay - like peroxide on a wound was her
description of this stuff. Does anybody have a clue what this might be?
And yes, I did scold her for buying what I could have made by hand.

Lisa, I've read that some of the big suppliers for terra cotta pots spray
them with insecticides. Your mom might want to stick flowers in those pots
and let you make her some with a known history. This is also a selling
point for those of you who make planters that are suitable for herbs, or
vegetables.
