teaching children & birdhouses

Children like to use what they make and functional clay birdhouses are
not a good idea. The ceramic houses are heated by the sun, the ceramic
house heats up and the baby birds inside cook.

I suggest tiles/trivets as a project.

my 2 cents

I really liked the birdhouse concept but I agree with the post on them
getting too hot. Also how do you clean them out after each season? What
about modifying the idea to Bird feeders. They can be used and the kids can
watch the birds.

A note on birdfeeders. if you make anything to hold hummingbird necter
containers please don't put a perch on it. In certain climates hummingbirds
get hypothermia if they don't move to feed. Removing the perches solves the
problem

I am so happy to see all the potters sharing their skills with children.
Most schools don't have the funds to set up a full blown ceramics studio. I
was fortunate that the college instructors in my area were willing to fire
the projects. I used Egyptian paste to do small figures and ornaments (tied
it in with Social Studies) Using this we only had to do one ^06 firing and
he could put them in a bisque fire.

If anyone is interested in teaching small handbuilt ceramics classes for
some extra income contact your local 4H groups (They have main offices
usually through county extension services), most kids love to do clay
projects and 4H has a division for ceramics. Although the books are more
hobby ceramics oriented there is categories for other types.
