The reason you are getting advice from other potters to simplify is because of
the huge chasm that exists between what the public is looking to buy and what
the organizers of the shows are looking for to put in their shows. What
actually will sell well at shows is the opposite of what the organizers have
their juries looking for.

In over 25 years of doing thousands of shows, this is the most devastating
trend I've seen develop. After awhile the buyers will stop coming to the
shows if they cannot find something they can afford and "live with." By the
time the organizers catch on to this effect, it will be too late. In my
opinion this will lead to a demise of shows in general.

If you want to make a living at as a functional potter, you are going to have
to develop alternative markets.
