Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions for my firing problem!
I want to let you know what has been happening here. We replaced
the plug and outlet so that is taken care of!. Then I visited with
a kiln repairman on the phone..turns out I have gotten some "dirty
clay". He figures that the ball clay in the clay had some coal( sorry
I have forgotten the technical name!) in it! He said it burns out
at 1800 degrees and that was causing the black smoke out of the
kiln. So went ahead and fired it and all works well ! Learn something
new everyday! Thinking of changing clay suppliers...!!
So my problem was really 2 unrelated problems.

To Susan in Nebraska,
It is too bad you had your problems, but certainly some good can
come from that experience.
The big lesson here is that many ceramic problems are not just one
problem, but are a bunch of problems. You have to solve them all,
usually one at a time. As I have gotten older, I have been amazed
at how many problems I encounter that are really a collection of
problems.
I'm glad you are over it now.
Cameron
