uranium danger

Hi Ron:
Briefly, yes, for a potter that is uranium's major danger, to
inhale the uranium salt or oxide, and then suffer damage to the lungs. Joe
Herbert said this but his words may not have fully registered since he was
being "careful" and "detailed" with his explanations. Further, if the
uranium went into an unbalanced glaze which released uranium ions into
food, then the food ingested, more internal damage could occur.
Once the uranium is incorporated into a "good-glass" balanced
glaze, its release of radiation becomes substantially less hazardous since
it is readily taken up by air molecules, etc.
Still, I personally would prefer not to use uranium in any of my
glazes. The planet's background radiation already has a sufficient impact
on my health; I do not need to add to this body burden.
Til later. Tom.
