used kiln-high fire question

Hi Clayart people. I have a skutt 1027 kiln that I bought used from a woman
that used it to fire porcelain doll heads. Because I have assumed that she
used a high fire porcelain, and therefore the elements could be in less than
in perfect condition, I have only fired low fire. Bisque at 03, and 05 and
06.

My question is: Do you think I would ware out the elements quickly, or more
quickly, if I did some high firing?

I have fired about 10 times with perfect results. The elements hang out
slightly in places, and even way out on the floor. I was too timid to pin
them back, as I read that they were easily broken.

Love Clayart!! I have not been with you for a year, but when I asked
questions before, I got such wonderful help. I read every post, and enjoy them
all. Love the adventures of your visits to foreign potteries.

Hi Shirley,
Elements that are fired to cone 10 usually have a shorter life span than
elements fired to cone 06.

It is a good idea to fit the elements back into the grooves. If one element
touches another during the firing, it will short. This may result in
burning out both elements, not to mentioin ruining a firing. Elements can
be pinned in place or the brick can be repaired to secure the elements in
place. There are plenty of servicemen available, if you need help finding
one feel free to call.
Let me know how else I can help,
