Good morning, Claynauts,
Does anyone have suggestions about where to go to see good stuff in
Philadelphia?
I'll be there from December 5-11, car-less and mostly lurking around the
main business area--Broad & Walnut.
(I do know about the huge museum and figured that I would work out how to
get there after I'm tucked up in the hotel.)
PS If you get a chance to visit the Getty in LA--LEAP at the chance! The
site alone is an experience. A great example of what an architect can do
with a really big budget.
Cheers,
Jeanette

there area plenty of things to di in the philly area involving the arts and
outside of the "big"museum. try the old city section where many art galleries
have sprung up that include the clay studio. the clay studio has a large
gallery, classroom, resident artists and so on. there is also the avenue of
the arts where the university of the arts is. even though i am only 15-20 min
from the city, it has been a while since i have ventured into it to take a
peek. try contacting the dept. of tourism or call the U of Arts directly,
maybe their addmissons dept could help. hopefully someone else will respond to
your message that is from the area, i know theyre out there. hold tight
even if you are looking for things out of the art world. there is always the
historic tour of colonial philly like the liberty bell or independence hall.
if all else fails, just grab one of those guys driving the horse carriages,
they know where to go and what not to do......good luck and enjoy the visit

Jeanette,
Here are a few stops for your Philadelphia visit, limited to town. The 76 bus
(I believe) goes to the Art Museum, passing the Rodin Museum en route. If the
weather is good, it's a nice walk. Also, along the parkway to the museum is
the science museum, the Franklin Institute and the natural science museum,
Academy of Natural History.
There are lots of galleries on Walnut Street, some on the second floor. Helen
Drutt is above Knit Wit next to Borders on the 1700 block. Fleisher Ollman on
17th Street, south of Walnut, has outsider art. Also, spend some time in Old
City, north and east of your start at Broad and Walnut. The Clay Studio is on
2nd Street between Arch and Race. There's a holiday show opening Friday. If
you're here Friday night, wander the area which is open for First Friday.
Great martinis at Continental Diner, 2nd and Market, but real crowded on
Fridays. Other good restaurants around Old City: the Fork, Marco's, Buddakhan,
Rococco, Paradigm. Snyderman is on Cherry, the 300 block showing mostly
furniture on the main floor and crafts below. On 3rd Street, there's Moderne
which has Nakashima and Esherick furniture as well as art galleries, old
Bauhaus furniture at Mode Moderne, modern furnishings at OLC, lots more. The
modern art museum is called Institute of Contemporary Art in west Philadelphia
by the University of Pennsylvania.
Any questions, call me at 215/732-8699.
Lynne Berman at 2128 Spruce Street
You can stop here on Saturday or Sunday afternoon (2-7) for our annual holiday
wine and cheese and clay event

When you get to Philly you gotta go to - The Clay Studio - It is a really
cool place for Potters, They've got classes, galleries, visiting
artists. If you can get to town on the friday Dec 4 there is something
called first friday when galleries in the vicinity of The Clay Studio as
well as the clay studio are open serving refreshments and showing the
artwork they hav eon display. These are all within walking distance of
liberty hall
Have a Great Time

Hello Clayarters and Kia Ora,
At the end of September a member of our group, Craft Potters Nelson, New
Zealand, will be visiting Philadelphia and would love to be in touch with any
potter or potteries or places to visit. Tatjana Vucinic has been a member and
potter with us for nearly ten years and is a young lady with a lot of
personality. She has also become a potter of some ability and produces really
beautiful pots using a fine porcelainous type clay and with a range of strong
colours, very popular with the customers here.
Reply to the list or alternately I will take messages for her.
----Best Wishes Maggie----
