wax on ceramic

I am currently working in terra cotta clay with underglazes which I do a
lot of sgraffito carving into. I am not using any exterior glazes, but
instead I apply mink oil (the kind sold as shoe polish) and buff the
surface until dry. The result is a nice matt patina. My only problem is
that down the line, these pieces are hard to keep clean. Dust seems to
settle on them and it takes a damp sponge and some rubbing to remove it.
Does anyone have an alternative? I just chose the mink oil because it was
handy and seemed to do what I wanted but I think I need something that has
a harder finish. Paste wax was really hard to buff off and left a terrible
white residue. What types of wax are used on ceramic surfaces?

Try using Tung Oil. Apply it with soft cloth. Leave it overnight
and then buff...............anjali

I use a product called Trewax to seal and polish my saggar fired
pieces.I believe that it comes both as a paste and in liquid and is sold
commercially to seal ceramic tile floors. It is real easy to use and I
would call the finish a satin sheen, though I am not really good at
desciptions.
