Using theory and practice, investigate the role
that ornament/decoration and process/technology
continue to play in ceramics. Focus on
majolica, slips and polychrome glazes fired
at earthenware temperatures.

The Altered Pot
Jeff Oestreich
Using tea bowls, pitchers and place settings
as vehicles for altering thrown forms, Jeff
demonstrates a variety of techniques for
producing functional work, Slide lectures,
and discussions round out this workshop.

The Geometry of the Vessel
Chris Gustin
Explore how geometric shapes have been
used by potters throughout history in both
making pottery and decorating the surface.
Using slide shows, drawing, demonstrations
and hands-on exercises. Chris discusses
how geometry. proportion, scale, the human
figure, volume and gesture all play a role
in creating the final piece. Bowls, plates.
teapots, tureens, vases, etc. are looked at
in ways which reveal their underlying structure.

Raku Workshop
For students with handbuilding or wheel
experience. Focus on the Techniques and
forms relating to the heavily reduced glaze
effects produced by raku firing. Actual raku
firing is held at the C.W Post Campus
in Roslyn, NY. Transportation not included.
Glaze, Goves and tongs are provided,
Number of bisque pots is limited per person.
Enrollment is limited to 10.

Woodfire Workshop
This hands-on workshop encompasses the
complete woodfire kiln cycle. Make work at the Y,
then travel to Peters Valley State Craft Center
in Layton, NJ on May 14-16 to load and fire
the Ruggles and Rankin two chamber kiln.
Meals and lodging are at the historic
Valley Brook House, a circa 1700 farmhouse
located at Peters Valley.
