WILLIAM SHINN CERAMIC WORKSHOPS
CENTRAL COAST - SANTA MARIA, CA
''THROWING PLUS '' ---JULY 18
''EXTRUDING'' ---JULY 19

Two back-to-back workshops: ''Throwing Plus'' and''Extruding'' will be
offered July 18 and 19 by William Shinn in his Santa Maria studio. The
cost is $30 per workshop and students can take one or both.

July 18 - ''Throwing Plus''
The first day will emphasize the use of the wheel in combination with
other techniques such as: throwing an extruded form, throwing from a
mold, throwing inlayed colored clays (neriage), throwing inverted
forms, altering thrown pieces, etc. Other subjects will be covered:
toolmaking, repairing (pre and post firing), photographing
three-dimensional work, and packaging for shipping work.

July 19 - ''Extruding''
The Sunday session will emphasize the creative use of the extruder:
designing and cutting original dies, altering shapes after forming,
combining extruded pieces with slab and thrown forms, etc. Creating
extruded tools for making other types of functional and sculptural
forms will also be included. The afternoon session will be hands on.

For each workshop: Bring sack lunches (restaurants are five minutes
away). For Sunday hands-on, bring personal tools - clay will be
provided.

William Shinn will instruct these workshops using over 40 years of
art/ceramics experience which began in the 1950s at the Academie Julian
in Paris, France. Since then, Shinn received a B.A. in painting and a
Masters Degree in Ceramics at U.C.L.A. During his career, Shinn has
traveled extensively in the U. S., Japan, Europe, North Africa, Europe,
and Russia furthering his education and acquiring an international
recognition in ceramic art. Currently as a retired instructor from Allan
Hancock College, Shinn is a full time potter, painter, and sculptor and
conducts workshops.
