food safety and unglazed salt-firing

Hi all-

just checked the archives and did not see anything regarding the safety of
eating off of unglazed, salt-fired pieces. we have a big "suribachi" bowl
(mortar and pestle) that we suddenly became concerned about after reading
the postings on crazing and food-safety. the bowl did not get a lot of salt
effect on the inside. should we be concerned about bad chemicals eeping out
of the clay body and sneaking inside our bodies? for that matter, not to
beat a dead horse, but to make dinner ware, salt or otherwise, is it
necessary to glaze whereever food will be touching it?

thanks!
