how to fire self-hardening clay?

Can someone help my friend with the following question? She is teaching
art in Tanzania, and may not have access to regular moist clay.
Thanks, and bye for now. Reid Harvey

I have a ceramics question to ask you - I have only
self-hardening clay from the U.K. t work with - no kiln. Have you ever
pit fired the stuff? Will it work? If so, what do you suggest is the
best way for me to proceed with the idea - build a makeshift "kiln" with
bricks and heat it with charcoal and sawdust? I don't have much ceramics
experience but I'm interested in finding out more. We're doing clay
medalions and making artifacts for a 5th grade museum to coincide with
our Age of Discovery unit for 5th grade social studies.

From the experience of others including the girl I share my Kiln site
with (ran a ceramics workshop in Malawi) there should be clay enough
locally, and local experienced village potters to answer these
questions. Self hardening clay of UK origin is awful stuff to work with
and horribly expensive. AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE, believe me.
