Poor me, I know, but I am going to be on a quick art tour of Barcelona and
Madrid in March and wonder about reccommendations for places to see old
vernacular pottery. there was nothing but Delft in Holland except for 2
pieces in a museum and little else besides Majolica in Florence. I am
interested in old pots that regular folks used. Hey, speaking of regular
pots-does anyone know who made the pottery used in the Brother Cadfael
series? I think it is filmed in Romania or near there. There seems to be
lots of neat handmade pottery in the films.

thanks. other Barb

I am a brother Cadfael fan.
BUT in Barcelona go to the national ceramics museum de Catalonia. Also
Guell Park by Gaudi has fantastic mosaics and Sagrada Familia (go all
the way up to the top for a good view of the mosaic towers.
Im Madrid there is the Decorative Arts museum with great tin glaze from
all over.
The Archaeology Museum in Madrid has loads of pottery from the earliest
pots, includes Iberian and there is a mock Alta Mira cave outside the
museum. This is because the visitors to the real one are causing its
demise with CO2.

The Museo de Ceramica in Valencia is reopened after a five year
restoration! My friend is the director. I met him when his students were
firing the "Horno Arabe" at the Centro Agost as a doctoral project in
anthropology. They fired some of my students work as well.
It is the palace de dos aquas. And such a collection of pottery !There
was a show of lusterware in the temporary museum under IVAM while the
palace was under restoration.
Also in Valencia at the Ethnographic Museum there were good "everyday"
pottery and other folk arts. If you go down the coast, you can visit
Centro Agost and the Museo de Alfareria "everyday pottery" museum.
You can also visit the potters in the neighborhood who are still making
everyday pottery but some are exporting to Japan and France. In Elche.
20 km from Agost, is the Alcudia, an archaeology site from AC (antes Cristo)
with the greatest collection of early Iberian pots. Then there is the
ethnographic museum in Murcia and the Maritime Museum in Cartegena with
all the amphorae from their bay documenting Mediterranean trade over
10,000 years.
Have a great trip!

I have to agree that the Museo Archeologico is a Museum to hit whist in
Madrid, but close cities that are worth the side trip are the ancient
capitol Toledo, as well as the "City of Ceramics" Talavera de la
Reina.....and the tiny village of 'Puete' del Arthabispo (sp?) I found
wonderful small potteries in both areas....near Madrid.
