______________________________________________________
We are fortunate to have the opportunity to study with Mel Jacobson, one of
the truly great clay artists of our time. He is devoted to the belief of
"good teaching, caring for the craft and passing on the best we have to
offer."
Mel has studied and taught extensively world wide. A year and a half
apprenticeship in the early seventies with Kunio Uchida, master potter of
Kyoto, Japan was followed by 7 solo exhibits including the American Embassy
and Matsuya gallery, Ginza, Tokyo. He helped establish an art school in the
Persian Gulf states of Dubai and Abhu Dahbi. The December 1997 "Ceramics
Monthly" pictures Mel on the front cover and includes an 8 page story with 10
photos of his work.
Mel majored in sociology and philosophy at the University of Minnesota until
switching his emphasis to art in his senior year. He graduated with a degree
in Art Education in 1958, a Masters in 1961, and continued with a 90 credit
studio study in painting. Then he built his program into one of the finest
high school ceramics programs in the nation and retired after 34 years of
teaching. He also taught art at the University of Wisconsin for 16 years.
Mel was named one of the "Outstanding Ceramic Educators in America" by New
York University and "Studio Potter" magazine. As director and sole owner of
Hay Creek Studios, he has developed a place for professional artists and
teachers to gather and share ideas in art, ceramics, craft and theory. This
facility has a pottery with 7 kilns, a wood shop, metals studio,
blacksmithing, calligraphy, sewing and painting. Mel fires a 45 cubic ft.
"Minnesota Flat Top" kiln at his full time studio in Minnetonka, MN. with
traditional, functional forms and glazes at stoneware temperatures. Some of
Mel's plans for the workshop include Japanese throwing, measuring, making sets
to scale, bottles, teapots, teabowls, canisters, monster pots (30 lb.) and
tiny, tiny, tiny pots with plenty of time for Questions and Answers. Visit
his website at: http://www.pclink.com/melpots This will be an awesome
experience, please come join us.
