source of fiber

For those of you who are experimenting with paper clay and fiber
reinforced clay let me suggest that you consider ground newspaper
home insulating material for your source of fiber. I buy this stuff
at Lowes. Avoid waterproofed and fireproofed material. $10.00 worth
of this stuff will last me a year. I am mixing
batches of slip consistency paper reinforced clay and blowing it into molds and
onto a variety of core materials to build ceramic sculpture. I have
only scratched the surface of the possibilities of this method of
delivering the material. I have also added fiberglass fiber and
polyethylene fiber to the surface of the forms and to the mix.

Keep us posted when you discover something.

Lowell: I was thinking of you the other day when I received my newsletter
from Pyramid Atlantic, a paper-making studio in Maryland. They are offering
a course in sprayed colored paper pulp to make sculpture and 2-D works.

How large is the air compressor you are using to spray paperclay? I just
had an experience with spraying ITC and was surprised at the size of the
compressor I needed to rent. The compressor I use for spraying glazes
wouldn't budge the stuff. Looking forward to hearing from you. Barbara

I use a five horsepower compressor at between 30 and 50 psi. The
pattern pistol requires more air becaust the air runs continuously.
the sandblaster only uses air when you pull the trigger. Good luck.
i am out of the office of chair so i can start getting some of my own
work done.

Lowell

i have a seven month leave coming and am looking for workshops.
