Bill - you asked about using a kick wheel standing up? All I can
say is it's nearly impossible and not to be recommended! I started
learning at an evening class that had few elec wheels, and mostly
kick wheels, all to be used standing up, and they are probably FINE
for tall people with a great sense of balance, but were terribly
difficult for the rest of us normal people. I kept almost falling
over. Whichever leg I stood on ached. Whichever leg I kicked with
ached. And trying to keep balanced, centering, at the same time as
kicking really fast, and not letting your arms wave about - naaah,
whoever invented a standing kick wheel had a very very warped mind.
At yet another evening class there were two kick wheels which were
quite good for turning (trimming) but unfortunately the treadle-bar
thing was quite low, and there was a huge bolt in the middle of it,
pointing down, which linked it to the bar that joined on to the fly
wheel. Well, I cannot begin to describe the excruciating pain caused
by cracking the top of your foot with that sticking-out bolt. The
screams of agony could be heard for miles..... Eventually the
institute got rid of both these old clunkers, and bought a
couple more elec wheels. Probably couldn't stand the sight of blood
any more.
happy memories....?
