Hi... I''m wondering why the Amaco velvets sometimes flake off after bisque
firing=21? Actually some of my own underglaze mixes have started doing this
occasionally also. What am I doing wrong?? I have been airbrushing two =
fairly
heavy coats on greenware and firing to 05. Help=21=21=21 Peggy in the crisp=
and sunny

I also had that problem, when the underglaze is painted on completly dry
greenware, sometimes it would flake up and over after I glazed. I fixed the
flaking or spitting by adding water to the first coat to thin the underglaze
down, or you could spray a light coat of water onto the piece before you
start applying the underglaze. It seems that the problem occurs if you
brush on to thick of a coat onto very wet clay or too dry...so you have to
find the happy medium. Good Luck! Lisa K.C.

If you put underglazes on (velvets - Amaco) too thick, they will flake. You
can water down the underglazes and put on 3-4 even coats and get beautiful
results! I also fire to Cone 6 oxidation using underglazes all the time
and have NEVER had any flaking. I use Tucker's MCS clay body. That may
make a difference. Good luck.
