mold soap on bisque

Hi,

Someone wanted advice on how to make a mold off bisqueware.

Fired clay is in my experience always pretty rough and unyielding on the
surface, which means it is very hard to persuade plaster to release easily.
Not to say that you can't make a mold off it, but you'll spend a lot of
time trying to filling nooks and pits to get the surface into a releasable
condition. That's a lot of layers of mold soap.

My advice is to make a waste mold off your piece, cast the waste mold solid
in plaster (which will probably "waste" the waste mold) and then finish the
plaster to taste as your final model. Plaster can be sanded almost glass
smooth, it takes sealing from mold soap easily, and seems to have just that
little bit enough of flex in it that the mold will come off.

Good luck - and remember that free advice is worth every penny you paid for
it!
