Here is a sweeping compound recipe from RODALE'S BOOK OF PRACTICAL FORMULAS:
6 cups sifted sawdust
2 cups rock salt
1 1/2 cups mineral oil
Store in lidded container or plastic garbage bag.
To use, sprinkle on floor and sweep up.
They recommend buying real rock salt, not a chemical de-icer.
Wearing a mask is probably still a good precaution. The compound is good
for getting up loose clay, but I wet mop afterwards to finish the job.

I wonder why they include rock salt in there. I purchase commercial sweeping
compound and it seems to be just oiled sawdust. The idea is to have the clay
dust cling to the wood chips and not float into the air as it is pushed. How
would salt enter into the picture?
