i am very sorry that i have no websites or other such information.
i have been very fortunate to have friends in japan that send me
wonderful magazines, exhibition books, and a special series of books
about contemporary potters.
they are really very eye opening.
as mr. yellin has informed us often, japan is having some problems in
contemporary craft. it is not all a bed of roses.
they have cliques, in fighting, and severe competition for the yen.
and as to the point that i was trying to make..........there are thousands
of potters trying to make a living in japan...and many of them live in the
urban areas, and depend on the only source of power that is available to
them...
and that is electricity. so they make do...and very nicely i might add.
in the city of kyoto, there is a ceramics research center that is supported by
the cities potters........they will make any glaze, stain, color that the
potter wants.
it is like having ron roy x 1000.
as i have said, it is a different ball game.......professional, high tech
and moving fast.
if this is true, and i believe it is, it should give a great deal of
encouragement to all
of you out there that have electric kilns. It matters not what kiln you
have, what
temp you fire, or what glaze you use.
it is what you do with the materials available to you.
think of the best potter you know.........mentally put that person in jail
for 3 years.
give them a small electric kiln, and some decent clay and glaze materials.
bet that potter would still make great pots. different, but still great.

Dear Mel:
Check out this site. Lots of glaze recipes with photos - chuns, celadons,
copper reds, etc. What's neat is that they show the basic formula with minor
changes and you get to see the effect on the color, surface, etc. Neat site!

June, I tried pulling up the web site listed below and kept getting a =22not
found=22 message. Could you re-send the address in case there was a typo? =
Sure
do appreciate it. Of course, the problem may be my server.
