hot wax mix

A short time ago a CLAYARTER was having a problem with a fuming wax mix and
I sent
my formula which I had found to be OK but on looking at Greg Daly's "GLAZES"
book I
found his formula which was slightly different, so here it is, I hav'nt
tried it but
Being a Greg Daly fan I have found so far, all of his Formulae are good.

The mix starts with a metal tin [can] with a press down lid like a treacle
tin [can]
this has an inner rim which catches the excess wax wiped from the brush. The
tin is 3/4 filled with Parafin Wax broken into 1" cubes. Don't use Candle
Wax as the wax is
mixed with a materal to inhibit running and this affects the mix.
Add to the wax a mix of 60 parts kerosene [paraffin oil] and 40 parts baby
oil [light oil] .. To each litre [ 1.5 pints ] of this mix add approximately
50ml [5 desertspoons] of eucalyptus oil or lavender oil. Generously cover
the wax in the tin with this mixture and heat at a LOW temperature. If the
mix fumes it is too hot. If when the wax is applied it is opaque and does'nt
flow, add more kerosene/oil mix or increase the temperature gradually. Allow
time for the wax to heat - it is important that it NOT be heated on a high
setting first as it burns the mix and alters the blend.
When the wax is mixed correctly and not fuming, a brush loaded with with wax
can be still used after 1 minute out of the wax container. This allows time
for a brush stroke,,, not a rushed one.
Heat the wax container in an electric fry pan with a good temperature
controller that works on a low setting, this also prevents the fry pan from
getting covered with wax.
[the steaks taste better with out the wax]

Hope this is of some help for the fuming Potters.

Kind regards, Brian C.

Try the following for a mix that will flow at low temperatures;

First mix the following;
600 mls paraffin oil
400 mls baby oil
500 mls eucalyptus or lavender oil

Combine that mix with the wax in the proportions
75% wax to 25% oil mix.

Use on a heat that will give you sufficient melt and flow but not create =
fumes, preferable in a container with a lid. I use a leg waxer, its great. =
Its small, has a thermostat and a lid as well.

We stopped using open fry pans and straight wax in a teaching situation =
years ago for OH&S reasons.
