I donate about $400 worth of pottery per year to fund raising projects , do
several demonstrations for church groups, and teach Girl Scout groups and
public school groups for free. I have been told that none of these are in
any way tax deductible......that all I can really expect are stars in my
crown....that'd be great, but for now....I need a break ! Any advice ?

Have you considered using some of these "donations" as an advertising
expense? Request a statement from the organization to keep with your
records.

Merrie,
The value of your time or the value of your services is never a
charitable tax deduction. Your unreimbursed out of pocket expenses for a
charitable organization are deductible. If you aren't already deducting
mileage on your business return, you CAN deduct $.14/mile for the round
trip.
If you have a ceramics business, the cost of your pottery has already
been "deducted" as a reduction to ending inventory or as a paid expense
if you don't have inventory, and you can't deduct it twice which is what
you'd do if you added it to your Schedule A as a charitable contribution.

I write off all my demos, donations, etc. under the catagory of
advertising. Stick a business card or brochure in with pots or set up
brochures at your demo. You decide how much that is worth. If fat cat
corporate execs can write off Hawaiian trips by handing a business card to
a golf buddy, we can surely write off our good deeds for the community.

Potters can deduct cost of materials for pots donated....and we know how
much that is!!!
As for volunteering at schools, groups, etc you can deduct car mileage to
and from destination (miles x $$ allocated per mile).
It does add up...but not equal to our efforts.
As for mileage, you can also deduct this for medical, physical
therapy,,etc visits.This can add up.
Is clay dirt cheap when it comes to taxes?
My first reply...2 cents worth,
I really appreciate Clayart dialogue!!!

donated. I list it as donations from stock, under "Other Expenses" on the
back of Sched. C. Of course I have receipts as verification.
Ann in CA, where I just finished our taxes using Turbotax, and come to
think of it, the program checks for disallowable items, and didn't come up
with this item. HOPE it's right!

Ann --
Bad news. TurboTax is a wonderful program, but it can't read. When
you put "donations from stock" under Other Expenses, it hasn't a
clue what you mean.
Actually, my understanding is that you can only deduct the cost of
materials when you give pots as donations. There was a long
discussion of this last year -- check the archives if you have
access. I think the conclusion was, give the pots for "the
stars in your crown" and forget the deductibility aspect. If you
want to deduct a donation, give money and deduct it on your Schedule
A with other charitable contributions.
