.... I only have time to make about a dozen pieces a week,

1) Cost aside, should I get a 1018 or 1027?

I've just retired, and in the process of setting up a studio. I was advised
to get a small kiln rather than a large one. Ego got in the way and I bought
1027-3 with an envirovent.

The kiln and vent work wonderful. I detect no odours from the kiln, except
the smell of heat and dust that accumulate between firings. The advice I got
was good. I have trouble filling the kiln on a regular basis, and it is too larg
for small runs. As a result, enthusiasm for certain projects declines before
completion

It was also suggested to me, a smaller kiln may be more suitable, and if my
production got to the point I needed a larger kiln, the smaller would be good
for bisque ware, testing etc.

I also set up in the basement (16*24=384 sq. ft). I have a window, but replaced
basement door with 6' patio doors. Using either can help me vent the studio, but
have had to need to do such. The envirovent does not move much air, so I do not
think it needs a special cold air vent. It does need an external vent. I had a 4
whole drilled through the cement wall, to vent to the outside.

But, I would you rather get other opinions on venting a kiln. And, I'll read tho
with interest as well.

Hope this helps a bit.
