aaany advice on firing a kiln after almost four years of nnonuse
it is a sprung arch,,20 cu ft.,down draft.,four burners --venturi,
uncovered an aback yard with exposure to northeast wind offocean, sometimes
strong. it does have a roof cover. in the past we were unable to turn the
burners any way but full open even with some plywood protection onthe nort and
east. my husband built this like the rhodes kiln--perhaps smaller. it fired
very evenly in about 10 hours to cone 10. i am getting a blanket for the
arch--any suggestions? also woould like burners that i could control
and bring up slower.advice welcome,please

the brick are probably ok, but you should do a thorough check of the gas system,
valves, burner orfices etc. Any electronics? Safety systems?

You might fire this kiln up to red heat empty just to get all the moisture out
of it before you load it with pots. Also check the orfices to make sure some
mud dobbers or spiders havn't blocked them. Tracy Penland NC

PS also check the chimney to make ssure there re no bird nests blocking the
passage. A trial run will help with finding any problems. Tracy Penland NC

Also check the burners for spider webs. It's amazing how those little
beggers can affect gas flow.
