I have followed the various discussions on toxicity of various chemicals on
the forum lately. I often feel that some of it is overkill if you will
pardon the phrase.
I will throw in agreement with David this time. I live in a rural area of
North Carolina and the government (county, state?) came by a couple of years
ago offering to test private wells for free. Seems they were looking for
copper levels in wells and as it came from the faucet. There were some
findings that copper leached from the fittings on the pumps and even the
brass part of your faucet were not very healthy for people. The pH of the
water has a lot to do with it although as I recall it wasn't in the
direction I had assumed.
Be all that as it may, they passed new rules concerning the kind of fittings
that could be used on new wells and about additional tests before approving
new wells for household use. And made suggestions about how long you should
run your faucet before drinking the water.
You can in some homes see the amount of copper, there are blue/green stains
on the tub and sink. In the morning at our home I run the water for a little
while, because even though we have pvc plumbing, the water tastes metallic
from sitting in the faucet overnite.
As for copper and arthritis, there seems to be a lot more people in this
area with severe arthritis than in the mid-west where I grew up, could just
be genetics but I'm not betting on it.
Celia - regretting all those years of working with insecticides and
fungicides that are now banned...............................
