just a side bar to brads story of red wing.

the basic reason the pottery closed, was that a union came to town.
they tried to organize the workers, demand more money.
the guy that owned it, got it from his father.......he was a psychologist
and had little interest in the place.........so he laid out the figures.
said `if they wanted 4 bucks an hour he would have to close it`.
or, they could self run it and keep goin..........they chose the union, and
he closed it about a year later. he could not afford to lose money
every quarter. nice guy, actually wanted them to self run the place.

i have no opinion about the union need or not...not that close to the
place.......but a grand old institution died and a great many people
lost their jobs.

Thanks to all who gave me info on Red Wing Pottery. Now I would like to
know if anyone has heard of a potter named Eve Zeisel. Did she ever work
for Red Wing or is she just making similar forms? I refer especially to a
kidney shaped dish very similar in shape to one I boought from Glidden in
the '40s. I am inquiring for a friend who also owns similar pieces which she
bought from Red Wing in the '50s.

Thank you all,

Debby Grant in NH
