Hi John:
You may advise your students to try wrapping tin foil around their pieces
and piercing holes here and there to allow some of the carbon in. I get
great results on my rattles that way. I also wrap 26" tall pieces with foil
before they are placed inside the can which often produce wonderful flame
like designs. You'll also need a official "Fire God" which one of the
students can make in raw clay and add to the firing. After the firing they
can choose to use beeswax to polish thier pieces with. I use two layers of
tung oil first, it helps to make the clay less porous.
Most of all, they should look foward to the magic a sawdust firing offers.
Not always knowing the outcome has it's owm merit.
Good luck and have fun.
Regards Louise
