Adding my 2 cents to the slip cast discussion ...... I throw pots, and
hand build. But I also use slip cast. I use brushing glazes and
"paint" my cast pieces, as well as the thrown and hand built. They're
unique in their appearance, even if they're all mugs or soup mugs or
african violet planters or another cast piece. Most of my talent is in
my painting ..... I also oil paint. My throwing is pretty good, but I
couldn't throw a mug to save my life! Oh, I'd love to be able to, but
there are some forms my hands just don't agree with. Try as I might, I
do better with big stuff! My clients want mugs, so I use a mold. I
freely admit that any purchased piece is wheel thrown, hand built or
slip cast. I'm not trying to fool anyone. Certainly not myself! And I
don't think my talents should be discounted just because I use a mold.
If the day ever come when I actually throw a really, really good mug,
I'm headed for a mold maker!!!
