Dear Clayarters,
I would like to invite anyone coming to Columbus and
taking a side trip to Westerville, OH (Am Ceramic Society,Ceramics
Monthly, Orton) to check out a self-guided walking tour of
student and professional works displayed in businesses throughout
Uptown WEsterville. They are everywhere from an art gallery and antique
shops to an insurance company. Maps for the walk can be picked up at
the Art Gallery at Otterbein Business Center at 24 W. Main St. That's
Main St. in Westerville, not Main St. in downtown Cols. There is plenty
of free parking in municipal lots behind the stores.
If you make the trip, please e-mail me privately with any
comments on the work or the walk. Thanks.

I would second Paul Lewing's idea of going to Timberline Lodge. My
family tried to do the Mt St Helens trip a few springs ago and were
totally socked in with fog part way up the road. We went to
Timberline instead and it was a fantastic trip. A great route is
mapped out (146 miles round trip) in the Eyewitness Travel Guide
Pacific Northwest. It goes from Portland to Multnomah Falls, the
Bonneville Dam, along the Hood River - worth a stop to watch the
windsurfers - and winds up at the Timberline Lodge, where there is
skiing 12 months of the year, and a wonderful restaurant.
Have fun, whatever you choose. I'm sorry to be missing NCECA this year.

If it's REALLY socked in, and you don't feel like a trip up to Timberline in
the rain, here's another suggestion for a side trip, of about the same
distance as the other two, and one that will give you a real sense of what
the Wet Coast is like.
Head west out of Portland to Seaside and Cannon Beach, over the little bit
of coastal mountains there. There are lots of galleries in both of those
towns and the beaches are spectacular. Not your typical Florida
lay-in-the-sunshine-on-the-sand type beaches, but cliffs and big rocks.
Head north up to Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River. Another great
town. Only Juneau and Ketchikan, Alaska, have more rainy days per year than
Astoria in the US. Then come back up along the river to Portland. If you
have time you might even stop at Ft. Clatsop, where Lewis & Clark spent the
winter being ripped off by the Indians and watching the moccasins rot off
their feet. They hated it.
See you all soon, Paul Lewing

If you are not inclined to take a long drive out of town, I would also
suggest a visit to Portland's Japanese Gardens. www.japanesegarden.com
It's one of the best and most beautiful on the West Coast. The view of
Portland and Mt Hood from the main Tea House is spectacular, too.
By the way, a hearty welcome to you all from the Oregon Potters Association!

Hi Mark,
Thanks for reminding me about the Japanese Gardens.......I hope to tour
them on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday. I'd enjoy company.
I'm really looking forward to seeing some of those fabulous local pots
!.....and, you....and other Orgonians (sp?). I missed NCECA last year, so
I've saved up some really nice pots to trade. Remember when I won your mug
in the Clayart room...was that Charlotte ?
I'm excited about this trip out West.....wonder what the weather will be
like ? Rainy is a given....but, how cold ? My trip to Oregon several years
ago took me to the coast. I saw drift wood made up of entire trees.....it
was amaizing. What a beautiful state !
