I'd like to hear from anyone within a 2 hour drive of San Francisco who has or
knows of a place to do pit-firing, other than at a beach. What would be ideal
is private land where a small permanent pit could be dug, or a brick surface
pit built, in exhange for a fee, or a pot. Probably 6 - 7 firings a year. I
hope the clay gods are not laughing!

Naomi,

Check Hayward Area Recreation Dept. for pit firings. Tom Decker has them
3-5 times
a year in Castro Valley. That's only about 25 minutes from S.F.

Alice, in the beautiful Hayward hills, CA.

Alice,

Thanks for your info about Tom Decker & the Castro Valley site. I took part
in a pit- firing there a couple of weeks ago & it's a great place & Tom is
especially helpful & generous. The only problem for me is that the ungrogged
clay I use couldn't take the unprotected/uncovered exposuren nor the high
heat. All my pot cracked & color burned off. If I used a grogged stoneware,
I'd definitely enjoy that site.
