Thank for posting the formula Craig. I guess you would term it more of a
porcelainous stoneware because of the inclusion of ball clay. The ball clay is
probably why it's so user friendly! :-)
I have a new Soldner mixer so maybe when I find time to get back to the
studio, I'll initiate the mixer with a batch of this porcelain. If the #6 Tile
clay is still coming up short, then I might substitute Grolleg.
Do you know how the #6 tile clay has been running lately? It was very plastic
for a while and then there were complaints about later mine runs not being as
plastic.
Gotta get back to my planting and then I have to empty the kitchen and dining
room. They're taking the roof off the dining room next week and knocking the
walls out for our addition. They assure me they will be done in two months,
and then they'll move my kiln back and build the kiln shed. I'll be able to
get back to playing in the mud by the end of May!:-) My students are itching
for classes to resume! Actually, I'm kind of enjoying the break and taking
time to plan and plant gardens, design the kitchen etc.
Hope you're all healed and back at work!

Warmest regards,
June

Hi June:

Here's the porcelain body that I mentioned in the last post. It was
formulated by Tom Turner and John Callahan, a guy who worked for Georgia
Kaolin.

Turner Porcelain (Cone 9-10 red or ox)

Vee gum T 1.5%
6 Tile Kaolin 29.0
Kaopaque 20 14.5
Om 4 Ball 4.5
Custer spar 23.5
200 mesh silica 27.0

This is a very good throwing body. It also works well for hand building and
slab work. Fires very white but not as white as a Grolleg body. This body
can be purchased from Clay Art Center in Tacoma, Wa. I used to mix it at
the studio but after disc surgery 4 years ago I decided to let someone else
do the hard work. They call it "Martell", even though I told them that
Turner was the originator. Whatever!

Hi June:

As far as I know, it's OK. I haven't noticed any significant changes in the
working properties of my 6-t body. My actual body is another story! I can
send DBK Minerals an e-mail and see what they say. If they send anything
worth passing along, I'll post it to Clayart.
