I am a very very enthusiastic hobby potter with a 20 cu ft down draft gass
kiln.
My personal approach to glaze formulation is to start from both ends at
once.
First I get all the glaze recipies I can find.
then I have my glaze calculation program (insight as it happens)
finally I have all my knowledge/research about the nature of my materials.
Often I start from a known base/glaze which I may well modify by
substituting different ingredients because I am in the UK (this is done with
the use of insight and with caution knowing that same formulae but different
ingredients don't always make for samee result)
Some times I will start with a group of bases (eg shino recipies) and look
at them all when brought down to a common formula as well.
then a first test or two.
select promising ones
test again possibly with a line blend to vary some ingredients
so on.....
this keeps me happy and generally results in some good glazes.
I balk a bit at massive triaxials - others who are paid seem to have done
these already and I haven't the time to invent the wheel again
