Overall
Overall the conference was one of ( maybe"the") best we have had from my
own perspective. The program had too many attractions for me to atend all
the ones that I wanted too, even if I wasn't a board member. We had 3500+
attendees. Considering that the board was expecting 2600 or so, and
preregistration seemed to indicate about 2500, the conference went really
well.
Technical glitches
There were few seriour techinical glitches. One was the interference from
tyhe electric wheel with the sound system in Mark Hewitts demo. We will try
to antici-pate this in the future. Slides jammed, we had feed back
problems in a few instances. During The Glaze panel, an noise, like a
warning that outer space aliens were landing started coming through the
sound system. Despite the attempts by me, Ken McCollum, and the EXCELLENT
Crew from the hotel AV company, we couldn't make it dissappear. It turned
out to be from an electronic line tracer being used by the Convention
center staff. Fortuantely people were interested enough in the material to
ignore the sound.
Jammed Slides seemed to be a bigger problem this year. I think it is
porbably a mixture of old carousels and old labels. I will try to get NCECA
to spring for new carousels and encourage those who load their own before
they come to use new ones.
A combination of Ken McCollum and Robert Moore, Good Luck and a
professional acting AV company made for few glitches.
The Bus Tours
I went on the Westerville Tour. The tour went very well. It was a tour
where individuals stayed with their bus. It was not a "Shuttle" style tour.
This format worked well for us in Fort Worth.
The other tours this year were all shuttle style, this is where the buses
just kept running and you can get on and off at any stop you want. We
thought that this would work well because of the short distances
involved. My understanding is that people were left without a bus at the
end and often had to wait for an hour for the next open bus.
Registration
Registration was a bigger problem this year than it ever has been before.
The posters were late, so the number of people who were preregistered was
down. Registration also had the complication of bus passes and catalogs.
All in all it too went well. Reggie and Minerva have a good handle on the
process. They also had help from an NCECA member whose name just doesn't
come to me but she is the person who kept the buses together last year.
Hotels
Hotel rooms were at a premium. I hope to have a better hotel list earlier
this year.
Ideas
The board is considering moving the bususes to a two day scedule. You could
take the busses on Wednesday, Thursday, or both perhaps. Programming would
commence on Wednesday, and there would be more programs to choose from.
The board is toying with splitting the demos into two rooms of two demos
each. This would help cut the crowds and simplifiy many things on stage. We
have also already discussed the need for at least two cameras in each
demonstration.
My understanding is that the board will consider making the K-12 show an
official NCECA show during its may meeting. Wendy Rosen has offered to
sponsor the show next year.
I am off the board now, except as Director of Electronic Media.I will
continue to run the website and respond to questions about NCECA on
Clayart.
Aurore Chabot and Ted Vogel are now members of the NCECA board. They will
be good DALs.
It would be good however if those of you out there on Clayart started to
think about running for the board. It is not a good situation when everyone
who is nominated by the board, gets elected unopposed.
I am looking for some help in figuring out how arrange for someone to
handle online conference registration next year, and if anyone has any
information about how we might do this I would love it.

Louis Katz was awesome as usual in taking care of all kinds of little problems
that most people didn't even notice. You all should have heard him playing the
grand piano in the back lobby outside the Regency ballroom. He made the comment
that he had made the conscious decision way back when to do clay instead of
music because he knew he didn't have the time to make the total commitment
needed to be as proficient as he wanted to be in both areas of endeavor. I, for
one, am glad of the decision Louis made to be proficient in the clay arena and
share of his time and many talents. Lee Burningham
