titles for functional pieces?

Hello, all.
I'm at a little of a dilemma. I have a piece I'm sending out to a
contest in Louisville, but it's a functional piece. How do y'all go about
finding titles for functional pieces? Private replies would be
appreciated. You can reply to me at ganvira@netcom.com.

Regards,
Theresa

Hi Theresa!

How about "Blue Plate With Gold Stripes?" Use a simple description of the ware
you want to name. If you want to be moreso abstract, try "Blue Circular Server
with Gold Line." Use your imagination, but keep it simple. You might want to
visit an art gallery, or the websites of other ClayArt readers. There are many
good titles for functional ware out there. Good luck!

Hi Theresa,

It's really your choice. Sometimes I just put untitled on a piece of
functional stuff, but at other times, you can come up with something that
might just stick in a judge's mind or express a certain feeling you have
about a piece. I do large square teapots which I have called "Green Tea,
Chian Tea, and Malachite Tea" I also had a very unusual small box-like
teapot I called "Tea, Squared".

Nothing wrong with naming functional stuff, IMHO.

when my high school kids can't come up with a title, we fall back on the
good old, Untitled, or series 1, #2. it is valid. sometimes a little
dull, but valid.

My slightly tongue in cheek view is that "craft" gets a description and
"art" gets a title.

Calling a soup bowl 'soup bowl' is in my opinion redundant. It is obvious
what it is. I do not think it is necessary to "title" a functional piece,
and if you call it "Salt Glazed Casserole" it ceases to be a title and
becomes a description. But then I do not think that abstract pieces should
be titled either. Just my 5 cents worth (inflation)!
