Does anyone have a recipe for a cone 6 temoku that you can share.. .? I am
looking for a nice glaze that could be used by beginners.. with a degree of
ease. Thanks..

Hi Jim, this Temmoku recipe is from "New Zealand Potter" Volume 33 No 3, 1991 an
Brian Gartside was the potter who had commented on it:
Borax Frit 4 parts, Silica 2 parts,Whiting 2parts, China Clay 4 parts, feldspa
Potash 2 partsTalc 1 part
Red Iron Oxide 8-10% (!!!)
Increase 4 parts clay up to 10 parts for more mat glaze
Increase Frit to 5 or 6 parts for more shiny and fluid glaze
Gartside comments that the use of "parts" applies to anything: handfuls, cups,
spoons etc. The problem seems to be the %, but after measururing all the "parts"
you can weigh the whole lot and then figure out the percentage of oxide. Brian
Gartside writes that the original for this Temmoku comes from Hans coper.
I have been using this glaze and it is very reliable, the hotter it is fired the
darker the colour!
Good luck! Heidrun in Bangkok

Hi Jim,

Here is a recipe that I've gotten from other potters who have used it quite
successfully. I've seen it on others pots but am in the process of testing it
myself. Here's the recipe if you want to try it:

Volcanic Ash 60%
Gerstley Borate 35
EPK 10
Bentonite 2

Add: Spanish Red Iron Oxide 8%
Iron Precipitate 1-2

Hope you have some success with it.

Patricia

Here is a Temmoku glaze that we have been using for years. Fires to a good
^6 and breaks nicely on edges. Have fun!

Silica Flint 25
EPK 16.7
Neph Syenite 16.7
Gerstley Borate 8.3
Dolomite 8.3
Talc 8.3
Bone Ash 6.7
Red Iron Oxide 10
____

100

Jim--

Here's a recipe I picked up here a couple of years ago.

Gibby's Wild Rose Tenmoku ^6
Lithium carbonate 9.5%
Bone ash 9.5%
Nepheline syenite 55.7%
EPK 15.8%
Red iron oxide 9.5%
100 %

It is electric oxidation. Fairly forgiving, with extremes of color from
black (thin) to almost metalic copper-like color (thick), with speckling,
spotting, etc. Will blister if too thick, and run if too hot. But metalic
color will not show if too cool. Nice for dipping and dripping, not for
spraying. We use it increasingly here at the Crafts Students League in NYC.

Please clarify what "Iron Precipitate" is. I'm not familiar with this glaze
material as listed. Thanks for the reponse. Mitch

Mitch,

Iron precipitate is essentially rust shavings. You can order it from some suppli
and it looks a lot like iron oxide though a little darker. Someone told me that
could actually just scrape some rust particles into the glaze but I haven't trie
this so I don't know how effective it is. Since I'm just testing this temmoku gl
myself I also don't know whether the iron precipitate makes a difference or not.
could try it with and without it -- something I might do as well and see what
difference it makes if any. Good luck.
