Hello All,

I am now "officially" on the NCECA Board. I am the "liaison" (host) for the
Charlotte 2001 NCECA conference. I have begun a distribution list for all
those people in the Carolina area that want to get involved with helping
out. (Heck, we have people on the list that are not from this area.) If
you wish to be included, drop me a line with your email address and I'll put
you on it. The list will include news, updates and cries for help. My email
address is connellj@winthrop.edu

One issue that I plan on fighting for is the acceptance of the K-12
exhibition as an "official" NCECA sponsored show. As you may know the
NCECA Clay National and the NCECA Invitational (run in alternating years)
and the NCECA Regional Student Show (undergrad and grad) are the only shows
that are presently sponsored by NCECA.

For the last two years a few dedicated high school teachers (Kim Megginson
of Dayton, Ohio and Leah Schlief of Dallas, Texas) have put together the
K-12 exhibition. This has proved to be one of the most talked about and
exciting shows to hit our conference.

I, like many, had a negative attitude when I first heard about this show
last year at the Fort Worth conference. And I, like many, were blown away
by the quality and scope these youngster demonstrated. This year I made a
point of visiting the show and this years exhibition was even better than
last years.

I do not think the Board holds a negative feeling to make this an official
NCECA show. However, if they do argue against the concept I want to be able
to counter any opposition quickly and effectively. To do so I need your help
in the way of comments as to why it should be considered. I can come up
with many reasons myself, but I would like to be able to take a broad
spectrum of ideas and platitudes from you, the attendees. The NCECA Board
is meeting this May and I plan to putting this on the agenda.

Some obvious reasons to include it are; that it is about education, it is
about our future, it showcases our youth and gets them excited about clay,
it showcases the hard work the K-12 teachers are doing, it can identify up
and coming students that can feed into our university scholarship programs,
etc., etc..

Talking to the organizers, I learned that they paid $1200.00 to rent the
space at the convention center (most of this came out of their pockets). I
also learned that many of the K-12 students who were featured came to the
conference to see the show. Isn't that heart warming?

Please let me know if you enjoyed this show and if you think it should be an
"official" NCECA sponsored show.

Sincerely

Jim Connell

Hi Jim,
Wendy Rosen of Niche Magazine and the marketing breakfast has offered to
sponsor the show. I believe you will find the board receptive once the issue of
funding is out of the way.
The May meeting is a very compressed meeting. A lot happens in a very short
time. If you are proposing this, my suggestions are as follows.
1. Enlist the support of other board members.
2. Enlist the support of Michel Conroy who is exhibitions chair.
3. Work out a budget.Find out what Wendy Rosens genorous(sp) offer includes.
4. Get the item on the agenda, and discuss it with the Executive comittee
members if it requires an NCECA funds. The Budget is written before the whole
board meets and is approved by the board. Revision is difficult to acheive once
the budget comes to the whole board.
5. Make sure that you include that as an organization this show is a) within
our mission
b) part of our mission that we have neglected for too long c) popular with the
membership d) good for conference attendance numbers.

Good Luck,
Louis
