A few people asked me to send them this info so I thought I'd just post it
once in case anyone else is interested.
I wasn't meant to use plaster bats. I chip them, crack them and generally
mutilate them. About 2 years ago, I bought a piece of ceramic tile underlay
for shower installations and cut it into various size bats. This material
isn't the run-of-the-mill underlay. I had to use masonry blades and drill
bits to work with it because the stuff is almost like porcelain except that
it doesn't break. I've dropped bats from about 5' (edge first) onto a
concrete floor and they never chipped or cracked. It absorbs water and
releases the clay just about as quickly as plaster and after 2 years of
regular use, my 20" bats haven't warped. The 20" bat weighs less than 4
pounds compared to my 20" plaster bat which weighs 14 pounds so it's a lot
easier to handle. The stuff is called Hardibacker Underlay. A 4' x 8' x
1/4" piece is $22. Since I haven't passed out yet while using it or grown
another thumb, I figure it must be OK, but check the M.S.D.S. for yourself,
just to be safe. If anyone discovers that it's made out of nuclear waste,
would you let me know?
Hope they work for ya.
