nceca and smoke

Need to know, before I set my heart on going to a NCECA convention. Actually
it's a little late, since I would really love to go. BUT, I'm asthmatic and
VERY allergic to smoke. Are there venues where there is no smoking? What
about the Clayart room? Am I doomed to never meeting any of you wonderful
people? It would not be worth ending up in the hospital or dead. Well maybe
it would be worth it.

And, no, I don't wood fire or even raku fire because of the smoke.

I am not as alergic as you are, but I do get terrible headaches from the
smoke. the only places that there was smoke was in the bar. and
unfortunatly, at the dance. I couldn't stay there very long because of
that, and the band was great-

clayart room, exhibition, and demo's were blessedly smoke free. the
restaurants were smoke free away from the bars.

come and bring your respirator that you use to mix glazes. I may start
a new fashion trend at the potters ball next year by wearing mine if
smoking is allowed. ;)

Hi Diane,

These are the steps I took for a few years after my collapsed lung to avoid
smoke.
1. Reserved a non smoking room very early and had them note my need for clean
air in my file.
2. I have a small HEPA(18"cube about) air cleaner that is big enough to recycle
a normal hotel rooms air about 4 times an hour. I brought it with me.
3. Find a way to get in and out of the hotel that avoids the lobby.
4. Increased the doses of my medicines starting the week before the conference.

Most big hotels have nonsmoking lobbies but many don't enforce the rules.
Ask a board member in June how smokey the hotel was. The May meeting is usually
held in the conference hotel.

Dianne -
As far as I saw, there was no smoking in ANY NCECA venue, and never anyone
smoking in the Clayart room. As a group I think we are far too considerate
for that. I did notice that some people went outside (of the building) to
smoke periodically.

Diane,
I had the same concern as I an sensitive to smoke.
I watched my cousin die of lung cancer. She was a
non-smoker but too frequently exposed to second hand smoke.
I could not help but fear that there may be a gene defect
in our family.
I live near Boulder CO where there is no
smoking in restaurants etc. It is delightful!!!
I am not sure about Denver though.

Diane,
Mostly I only noticed lagre amounts of smoke at the bar. This actually
surprised me as it seems that fewer and fewer people smoke these days.
Then someone pointed out to me that in Massachusetts there is no smoking in
restaurants so my perception could be off from the National average. The
amounts of smoke we encounter at NCECA 2000 could have something to do
with the public smoking laws in Colorado.
The other suggestions that have been posted all look good for dealing with it.

Betcha those people smoking outside were Californians -- it's force of
habit since smoking in public buildings was outlawed a few years back.
Living in California as long as I have, it was a shock to experience
smoking inside buildings. The menu legends brought back some distant
memories: "Cigar and pipe-smoking prohibited in the dining area."
Personally, I prefer pipe smoke anyday, and cigars should just be banned
from the planet.

Okay, I'll climb down now from my righteous smokebox....I mean, soapbox...!

Be well...
