cone 6 shino

updated sun 13 feb 05

My project for a glaze chemistry class is to try to produce a shino
effect at cone 6 electric. If any of you have tried this and would be
willing to share recipes, techniques for trapped carbon etc. with me, I
will be most appreciative. Thank you. DM

Guess it is time to announce that I have been trying all the various
recipes for Shino glazes at Cone 6 reduction for the last year, and they
all work, carbon trapping included. The carbon trapping happens if you
get reduction happening early, usually I try to start reduction about
cone 06, and stay in light reduction to Cone 6, but sometimes, weather
related usually, reduction starts on its own before I get to Cone 06, I
have learned to not worry about it, because that is when the carbon
trapping happens, and also when I often get Copper reds that are better
than the ones I planned. Brilliant oranges from Shino with a bit of
carbon on one side of the pot-awesome!

hell, go for it.
make a glaze, flux the hell out of it.
and yes, if you can reduce at cone 011 you should
be able to get carbon trapping at cone 6.

it will be a new glaze.
please report back your progress and results.

Hi June,

Would you consider posting recipes for your glazes?

Is shino possible at cone 6 reduction?

Yes, it is. I've done it, and I've seen it
done by Lori Leary. It might depend to some
degree upon your shino recipe, but most
have low melt points. Lori might be able
to help, if she's on the list at the moment.
It will still need early reduction - I start
about cone 012 - 011 - for a rich surface.

Yes, Shino is possible at Cone 6 reduction! I have experimented with
several recipes found on Clayart, and at the moment like the Carbon Trap
Shino best. Vivid oranges, carbon trapping, you really can't tell
whether it is a Cone 6 or 10 firing just by looking at it. I did not
change any of the recipes I tried, just used them as is, no
modifications were necessary to account for a lower firing temperature.

Charles - There was an article in Ceramics Monthly last year about
cone 6 reduction by Rick
Malmgren(sp?) that may include shino glaze. Would you care to share
the glazes that worked well for you?

Hi Folks, we have just finished our first cone 6 reduction firing at =
R&T's Creative Oasis. We took the shell of an old electric kiln, ripped =
out the wiring and cut burner ports in the sides and a damper in the =
lid. The kiln fired beautifully to Cone 6 in about 4 hours. The results =
were excellent. Many copper reds, pink blushing and my translucent brown =
turned into a mighty fine Temoku. NOW I want to try some more glazes =
and I really want a shino. UNFORTUNATELY the only cone 6 shino I can =
find contain 40% spodumene and we don't have any. Does anyone have a =
tested cone 6 reduction shino recipe that does not contain spodumene? I =
have formulated a new recipe to test, but I am hoping to find something =
that is ready to go. Can anyone help?

Hi Charles...hope you will put your ^6 reduction glazes that were successful
on list. I am looking for a good tenmoku. I'll swap when mine are ready.

Hi:

I did an Ian Currie biaxial for shino's and instead of spodumene, I used
Fusion Frit 493, which is basically a lithium/sodium frit with a bit of
boron. Anyway, I would highly recommend trying 493 for mid fire shinos. I
fired the set that I did to cone 10 R but there were a lot of highly fused
shinos that looked very promising for the cone 6 range.

The ingredients for the set were: Nepheline Syenite, Fusion Frit 493, a
local iron bearing basalt stone, alumina oxide and silica. The 35 glaze
set produced Red, Orange, and white shinos.

Do a search in the archives for cone 6 shino and my name and you'll find the shino we used in woodfiring in New London, MN. I
also posted the cone 10 we mixed with it.

I pugged and bagged recycled clay all day yesterday and today so my arms don't feel much like retyping. :^) I'm typing
this much because of a very hot ofuro (japanese bath) and a couple yunomi of sake. ;^)

go to clay art archives at http://potters.org/category183.htm and drop down=
to "shino" and troll for your recipes there. Also go to http://grafik.sdsu=

ng may be found there as well
