I'm doing an independent study at school in ^6 oxidation glazes. However,
we don't have shelves for our electric kiln.
There are pieces of silicon carbide shelves that I could use. Would this
effect the atmosphere? Should I just stick with a bunch of stilts and some
soft brick?

Hi:
Silicon carbide shelves will conduct electricity and are not recommended for
use in electric kilns. There are elements for electrics called "globars" I
believe that are made of silicon carbide. You should probably use mullite,
or high alumina shelves if your school can spring for them.
