This morning I called L&L kilns to order a new lid for my J236-too many
crumblies in the top layer. I mentioned my deal about the insulation
falling out of the kiln stand on the kiln and the tech person said that
they had stopped using the insullation a while back because the stuff
charred and crumbled (I can vouch for that!) and tiny bits of the stuff
would get sucked up into the kiln and cause little black spots on pots.
well, now I have answer to that one too! I also asked about doubling up
the bottom layer by ading my old lid to the bottom of the kiln after the
new one arrives-sure no problem. So, thank you good mud people for your
advice and comments. when the new lid arrives, I shall put the old one
under the bottom of the kiln, on the stand and fire away! Thse kilns are
not metal clad at the bottom by the way Chris.

Hi Barb,
Great, it sounds like its resolved. I did have a recollection of a kiln
manufacturer that
used insulation in the stands, but did not think it was L&L. Recently, we
have been replacing kilns at a local school board in which the cases have
completely rusted out (mostly just the side walls). My guess was that you
may had been experiencing the same thing. Thanks for letting me know,
hopefully i`ll remember next time it comes up.
