I just received an advertisment for wrought iron tables, with plywood tops
for inserting tiles on. I have seen these at shows and want to start selling
them. My question is to attach the tile to the plywood do you just use
regular grout or something else?
Thank you

The typical method for tile is to attach the tiles with a mortar
material, then do the grouting between.

Carol,
I have found Liquid Nails to be extremely strong, cost effective, and easy to
apply. We used it in Anne Currier's tile class in Alfred, and some of the
other students had extremely large pieces (over 8 feet high wall pieces). My
piece was a tabletop that was comparable to the size of a double bed (I don't
recall the precise dimensions- it has been a while), so the structural
integrity is very good. With a product like that holding your table top
together, you can ensure a high-quality, durable piece.

Carol,
I was involved in making 2 mosaic tables for a theatre I worked at. I don't
remember exactly what we used to glue the pieces down in place, but we got the
adhesive at a tile shop (you know, bathroom kitchen tile) A tile shop would
probably be your best bet for making sure you bought the right stuff.
The owner of the shop we went to was very helpful, and even gave us some tips on
how to make everything fit into place. I did the iron work and inset a piece of
exterior plywood into the steel frame. We then broke up different colored
commercial tiles into pieces with a hammer. After we had our pieces, we set them
in place on the plywood. We hand fit them to make the desired pattern. Once we
had out pattern we took clear contact paper and pressed it onto all of the tiles
Once all of the tile pieces were stuck to the contact paper we lifted up the
contact paper and all of the tile pieces that were stuck to it. We applied our
adhesive to the plywood, and then positioned the tile pieces back in place, and
pressed it all down very firmly. 24 hours latter we peeled back the contact pape
and grouted the spaces between the tile pieces.
cheers
Kim

Home Depot has lots of little how-to classes each week, one of which is =
setting
tile, both floor and wall. The demo lasts about 1 1/2 hours, and they are =
quite
helpful and can help you with your specific questions and help you get the
right, and right amount of, materials.

Carol...
Regular grout works fine if the wood is stiff enough for
the unsupported span of the table not to flex. Grout must be
sealed against spills, rain, etc. with a commercial grout sealant
available at any tile installation center, e.g. Home Depot. I've
found that mastic is a good adhesive to work with, but a polybond
thinset should also give good results.
Hope this helps,
J.B.
