Thank you to the Clayarters who attempted to clear up my confusion
concerning the philosophic and aesthetic acceptance of "molds" in
creating pottery when the same potters tended to reject "ram presses and
jiggers." Having little experience with any of the methods discussed, I
more or less felt the uses were similar. Well, for you who posted that
you also were baffled... seems that they're not all that alike...and the
key word is "mechanization," used by three different Clayarters to
suggest that ram presses/jiggers are mechanical aids, where molds are
not. D. felt that ramming and jiggering "let the machines dictate more
of the design because they can only do a limited range of things well."
"Molds, on the other hand, allow quite a bit of control (of form)--if
you are a good mold maker."

Aren't Clayarters incredible? And Joe and Richard for creating the list?
I even had several serious and thoughtful responses about "being an
artist." One in particular was meant to give me something to "muse"
about, and it certainly has. Thank you to you-know-who-you-are.

In the Mojave not meaning to seem mysterious, but I'm not comfortable
posting information sent direct e-mail...and would probably be a lot
less comfortable if somebody comes and conks me on the head for
revealing private stuff.
